Mango Garden Restaurant, Rumah Terbalik, Sabah

If I ask, what are the signature food in Kota Kinabalu,
off course many of the Sabahan and students are able to list out a bunch of famous cuisine in KK...
Tuaran mee, San yuk Mee, Yoyo, Upper star, Roti kahwin...
Wait a minute....
How about local food like Kadazan food, Brunei food, Dusun food and other etnic's traditional food?
Honestly I don't have the chance to try out these local traditional food...
I think it is hard to find a "one stop" restaurant that you can try all of the Sabah traditional food.

But, with Mango Garden Restaurant of the famous Rumah terbalik, Sabah,
you can try all the Sabahan local food just under one roof!

If you think that a restaurant that serve traditional food will be a "warung" looking restaurant, think twice as it looks sophisticated and "high class"!!!

We were given a warm welcome by the Chef of the Day- Chef Lowell, the award winning chef who have many years of experience.
I love listening to his story about his journey in searching and learning of local Sabahan food~

Looking at their menu, I was amazed with all the traditional food available and  name of the dishes which I hardly pronounce!
It was my first time trying these local food and I can only say that Chef Lowell's team really done a great job by turning these local cuisine into presentable fine dining!
So let's have a look at the food here~~

Manuk Tinapah for RM13.50.
Weird name right?
Well, it is actually barbequed boneless chicken quater back marinated with special traditional herbs and spices and topped with coconut milk~~
I thought the chicken will be hard as it was barbequed,
but I was Wrong!!!
The barbequed chicken was so soft while the herbs and spices really do mix well with the coconut milk!
Tumbs up for it!!

Sotong Bakar Masak Sambal Tomato for RM12.50.
This is a Bajau Ubian tribes traditional seafood dish.
I was interested with the sambal tomato sauce as I never try eating sambal with tomato before.
It did a great job in decreasing the spiciness of sambal, making it eatable even for those who cannot bear to eat spicy food~

Tuhau Miampai daging Salai for RM10.50.
This is a lovely dish of slice beef marinated with Tahau, traditional pickles of local ginger stem.
Mostly, non Sabahan don't really dare to try this Tuhau cause it taste a bit weird and very spicy..
But Chef Lowell's Tuhau was mild and yummy which I think many can accept the taste of it.

Well, a mouth full of slice beef topped with Tahau, it was just so delicious and I can't stop eating it!
Well, most of the Tuhau was finished by me~~ Xp

Otak-otak Kagong for RM 10.50.
Kagong means Crab in local language, this is a minced crab meat otak-otak marinated with different herbs and spices, all stuff in a crab shell.
It was my first time eating Crab otak-otak, where I used to eat fish otak-otak which is famous in Terengganu.
This Otak-otak kagong originated from East coast Sabah, Sempurna.
A traditional food of Bajau trip there.
Chef Lowell went all the way to Sempurna just to learn this delicate Bajau cuisine from the local people!

Sup Tulang Bidai Lembu for RM12.50.
P/s: It was served in a big bowl actually but now served into  smaller bowl to be divided among us.
This is a traditional sup which usually cooked during wedding ceremony in Sabah and drank by the family members only.
Well, the soup did not have a strong meaty taste but rather fragrant with herbs and spices~
P/s: Mango Garden Restaurant plant their own herbs and vegetable, so they are Organic!!!
Do remember to try their Hinava Sada (marinated fish fillet which eaten raw, a Kadazan Dusun cuisine) and their Bambangan (endemic fruit of Borneo)!
Feel so sad that they were out of stock when I'm dining in.

Yogurt with pineapple juice

Rumah Terbalik Special Brewed Coffee~`
Mango Garden has an partnership with Santola Bar, where this Rumah Terbalik Coffee was specially brewed by Santalo Bar.

After eating so much of food, it's dessert time!!
Well, there's always another stomach for dessert!!
What so special about Mango garden dessert is they use local ingredient and fruit in making all their cakes~~~

Berangan Caramel Chocolate Cake for RM6.50.
A mouth full of frozen, icy local Berangan Banana which dipped with caramel,  mixed perfectly with the chocolate cake,
Oh My god!!! I just Love it!!!
I have to say this is the best chocolate banana cake that I ever tried!
If you are a non-sweet dessert lover, this banana cake is a must try for you!

Casata with Kundasang Strawberry Compote & Sweet Mango Coulis for RM6.50.
This is a combination of 3 different flavours which are chocolate mouse, strawberry and mango!
The trio chocolate mouse is topped  with  Mango Garden homemade strawberry jam made from local strawberry from Kundasang and lined with a layer of sweet mango which harvest from their own mango farm~~~
I love this not too sweet dessert where you can actually eat the flesh of original strawberry which scattered on top.

Tenom Coffee Tiramisu with Raspberry Jelly for RM6.50.
P/s: You will get a slice of free cake if you celebrated your birthday here!!!

You can choose to have your dessert either in the Mango Garden restaurant or the Rumah Terbalik Cafe.
Rumah Terbalik Cafe is a comfortable place for friends to yam cha or chatting while having the desserts or drinks.

They even make their own bun in Rumah Terbalik cafe!!
Well, good news for all the student!
If you plan to have a weekend get away, Rumah Terbalik will be a great choice as now they are offering a promotion pack for student with just RM12, you get to tour around the Rumah Terbalik and get a BUN and a cup of tea or chocolate drinks from the cafe!
P/s: The normal entrance free is RM10.

After all the eating session, I get to visit their own backyard herbs farm~
Everything is organic and healthy~~
