Thalassemia?

Heard of this word before?

You might heard it as Malaysians have to test for Thalassemia before getting married..

But why do we need to do that?

Thalassemia is an inherited blood disease transmitted by gene where body makes an abnormal form of hemoglobin ( protein in red blood cell that carries oxygen),

 resulting excessive destruction of red blood cell and leads to anemia.

If both parents are Thalassemia carrier, then there is 25% chance that the children born will be inherited with this disease.

Children with this Thalassemia disease will suffer from severe anemia where they need regular blood transfusion once a month through out their life just to survive.

It is now the world's most common genetic blood disorder and the amount is drastically rising.

7% of the world's population are carriers and there are 400,000 babies who are affected born each year.

Sabah has become the state with highest rate of Thalassemia cases in Malaysia.

In Sabah, these affected child often do not live beyond their teens.

So, WHAT CAN YOU DO TO HELP THEM?

Be a Blood DONOR!!!

It don't cost you money, we just need you to share some love...

Blood is needed for the blood transfusion therapy to elongate the life of Thalassemia major patient.

Blood transfusion helps to improve anemia and suppress the ineffective erythropoiesis.

In Every 3 second, Someone needs a blood transfusion to survive.

Donating Blood is the MOST Precious gift of life that you can ever give.
